그런데 막판에(at a late stage) 사랑의교회(SCC)에서 말(speak)을 요청받았다"고 했다.

(I am very sorry for any distress, disappointment or anger that has arisen from this event)고 했다. (I would be very happy to meet on that future occasion with any who have been disappointed with me and offer them my apologies. I will learn from this situation and ensure it does not happen again)이라고 말했다.

한편 C.S.

Oxford, 12 June 2019

Dear Hosung,

Thank you for your e-mails concerning my recent visit to Korea. I am so sorry to have been slow to reply, but I wanted to make sure that I had understood the concerns that were being expressed about my visit and ensure that I responded appropriately. As you will know, I do not speak Korean, and so do not have any reliable way of understanding the concerns that were being expressed.

I was invited to Korea for three days primarily to speak at two conferences, one on C. S. Lewis (Saturday 1 June), and one on Jonathan Edwards (Monday 3 June), as well as to preach at some local churches (Sunday 2 June). At a late stage, I was also asked to speak at SCC. As this church supports some important initiatives in theological education in England, I was happy to do this, and commend them for their international vision. I was not, however, made aware by those organizing my visit of the serious divisions between the congregation and the pastor, or the lawsuit or other concerns. Had I been made aware of these, I would not have spoken at the church.

Since returning to England, some Korean correspondents – including yourself – have send me some links providing further information about this situation. I must emphasize that I was not aware of this material before or during my brief time in Korea. I did not realize how other Korean Christians would interpret my acceptance of this late invitation. If I had known about these concerns, I would not have agreed to speak at SCC. It would not have been appropriate for me to speak in such a divided community, in case I was seen to take sides. I have declined invitations in the past to speak in such contexts, but was unaware of the complexity of the situation at SCC.

I also need to make it clear that neither this particular dispute, nor other aspects of the SCC situation, were raised with me in any conversations during my time in Korea – whether private meetings, personal conversations, or public discussions. I was never asked for my opinion on the matter, nor did I offer any comments on it, or take sides with the parties involved by offering my support for one side rather than another. I simply was unaware of the situation. It was never discussed with me; and I never offered an opinion on it.

I have since been made aware that my speaking at SCC may have been taken to imply my support for certain persons. This is not the case. I was simply not aware of the situation. My desire was to serve the churches in Korea, and I was not aware of the complexity of this particular situation. I spoke at other churches, as I think you know, without creating any controversy. Again, to be clear: I made no comment on the dispute at SCC during my time in Korea, or subsequently.

I fully realize that you and many Koreans will feel that I ought to have looked into this in more detail. You are probably right. With the benefit of hindsight, I can see that my motivations for visiting SCC are being misunderstood. I genuinely wanted to be of service to the churches in Korea, and was unaware of the situation, or the church’s reputation locally. I am very sorry for any distress, disappointment or anger that has arisen from this event. I am also very grateful to you for writing to me. Please convey my apologies to any who feel angry or disappointed with me. I may have been naïve, and I fully understand this. I love Korea, and hope to return in the future. I would be very happy to meet on that future occasion with any who have been disappointed with me and offer them my apologies. I will learn from this situation and ensure it does not happen again.

Best wishes,
Alister McGrath
